A big victory for the Democratic Party

The picture above is taken at tonight’s caucus at the Cedar Heights Elementary School in Cedar Falls Iowa.

Iowa is a very white state. Tonight, white Iowa democrats and Independents put Obama over the top because they felt he was the best candidate. At the caucus I attended, Obama came in first with 143 votes, Edwards had 119, and Hillary had 83. It appears almost 40% of the Iowa caucus votes were independents (independents can vote in the democratic caucus if they change their registration at the door). The independents broke for Obama almost five to one. This surge of independents clearly put Obama over the top. Undoubtedly the Iowa caucus results further demonstrate that Independent voters are trending democratic.

While Hillary did not carry the day in Iowa, she was in the fight. The big loser may be Edwards. Without a win in Iowa it is questionable as to whether Edwards can remain viable. Hillary remains a serious contender for the Democratic Nomination. Hillary may have to work harder to get her message across. But there are no doubt friends; Hillary’s message is the best of the bunch.

It has been a long day and I am exhausted, so look for the rest of my thoughts on Iowa to appear over the next few days.

Good night and God Bless....

CAUCUS DAY IN IOWA

Dear Friends and other gentle people;

The Case:
The case has been made. Hillary is the best choice to be the next President of the United States. Hillary’s specific proposals on Health Care will cover every American. No one will be left behind, no one. Hillary will repair America’s standing in the world by the use of super diplomacy and working with everyone in the international community not just the US puppet states who make up Bush’s “coalition of the (bribed) willing”. And most importantly, Hillary will start bringing our troops home from Iraq in the first 60 days of her presidency. My friends, I believe in Hillary. There are many other reasons to support Hillary but time and space do not permit. For more information check here.

The Caucus:
The voters in Iowa take this process unbelievably seriously. We have helped out on a number of visits from Hillary and Bill in the greater Waterloo area. Many Iowans I spoke with had seen all the candidates and were putting forth an effort to pick the best candidate not just the lesser of the evils. Out of this process: I have met significant numbers of Iowans who are enthusiastic Hillary advocates. We all know the polls show a close race here in Iowa. Bill and I will serve the Hillary campaign in today’s caucus as Caucus Captains. While we can’t vote, we can help by ensuring union members who support Hillary know where to go and what to do to help Hillary carry the day here in Iowa. History will be made here in Iowa this day what ever happens. I am proud to play my small part in this process.

There are many reasons I support Hillary, not the least of which is that this country needs to be able to elect a qualified woman as president. I support Hillary because I think she is the best candidate running, female or male. However, I also want my eleven year old daughter to grow up in an America where any child of any race, boy or girl can grow up to be President.

Good day and god bless each and every one of you!

- Robert

One day to go......

Well friends, it was yet another long cold (wind chill of –15) day on the caucus trail here in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. We were in our precincts doing final delivery of packets for our caucus captains and literature drops to identified AFSCME members who have expressed both their support for Hillary and their willingness to caucus on her behalf. Following that, we attended a speech by Bill Clinton given at the National Cattle Congress here in Waterloo. Even though he was visibly tired, our former President gave an impassioned speech on behalf of Hillary to a crowd of several hundred (perhaps as many as a thousand) people. We are now less than twenty four hours from the caucus, and will start our day early tomorrow morning by trying to reach every single member that hasn’t previously been spoken to, to implore them to caucus for our candidate, and to encourage them to bring their likeminded friends, neighbors, and family members with them. After we have finished that, we will be giving rides to the caucuses to those who the Hillary campaign has identified as needing them. We will then be at our assigned caucus sights to observe the process and to assist in any way that we can, short of caucusing ourselves. I look forward to tomorrow as the first day of many leading to the election of Hillary as our next President. Although the polls are tight- indeed to close to call- I am positive that Robert and I have done everything in our power to assist the campaign, and we are optimistic of a victorious outcome.

All My Best

Bill

Greeted by sub-zero wind chills!!

Today was a real eye-opener for us! The AFSCME team was split into four groups with widely different tasks to accomplish. The least popular among our compatriots was to drive over two hours into Northeast Iowa to deliver caucus info to the rural areas near the Wisconsin border. Robert and I pleased everyone by volunteering for this duty. We reached the tiny towns of Guttenberg, McGregor, and Volga in the early afternoon with the temperature near 0. To our surprise, these are Mississippi River towns with absolutely spectacular views. We delivered the info as best we could, considering several of the roads we traveled were completely snow covered and in some cases drifted over due to the high winds. We arrived back from our trek at nearly 10 pm, exhausted but satisfied that we had accomplished one more task that will help Hillary on her road to the White House. Tomorrow we will do final door-to-door visits in sub-zero wind chills to impress on our members the need to attend the caucuses for Hillary.

My Best to you All, See you Soon!

Bill

Our New Year Day Surprise.....

We were in the Guttenberg area of Iowa in Clayton County all New Years day. It is about two hours north east of Waterloo up along the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin Border. We were dropping off Caucus packets to Hillary supporters in the outlying areas. The AFSCME Hillary coordinator requested someone to do this task and our hands shot up. All the other AFSCME staff were relieved as they were not pleased by the prospect of driving 2 hours or more into the hinterlands of Iowa in 2 degree (-20 wind-chill) weather with blowing snow. However, we relished the opportunity to see this part of Iowa.

I was not prepared for the beauty of this region. We drove about 2 hours through typical flat Iowa farmland. Suddenly the topography changed dramatically as we hit the rim of the Mississippi River Valley. The Mississippi River twisted through an almost magical rural winter landscape. Guttenberg is a small Village nestled in a river bend deep in the valley along the river shoreline. It looked as if many of the Guttenberg village homes and buildings were built prior to the 1890's. To add to this dramatic picture there were over ten Bald Eagles swooping into the icy waters of the Mississippi fishing for their food. Mind you the temperature was -20 below zero wind-chill with blowing snow that at times was blinding. Barely a soul was out on the roads. Iowans in this rural, isolated, wooded valley greeted us warmly as I am sure they questioned our sanity. I was totally unprepared for the dramatic beauty of this landscape. I had to think that the community's along this section of the Mississippi have changed little since the giant waterwheel steamboats plied the river. I could almost hear the boat’s men yelling "on the mark twain" as those ancient giant's plied through the dangerous waters of the Mississippi river.

Wednesday we work with our assigned precinct captains in a final push to get AFSCME members to the caucuses. We start early and end late these days. Both Bill and I are exhausted as we near the caucus on Thursday. Your prayers and positive thoughts are appreciated.

Good day friends and God Bless,

- Robert
