The picture above is taken at tonight’s caucus at the Cedar Heights Elementary School in Cedar Falls Iowa.
Iowa is a very white state. Tonight, white Iowa democrats and Independents put Obama over the top because they felt he was the best candidate. At the caucus I attended, Obama came in first with 143 votes, Edwards had 119, and Hillary had 83. It appears almost 40% of the Iowa caucus votes were independents (independents can vote in the democratic caucus if they change their registration at the door). The independents broke for Obama almost five to one. This surge of independents clearly put Obama over the top. Undoubtedly the Iowa caucus results further demonstrate that Independent voters are trending democratic.
While Hillary did not carry the day in Iowa, she was in the fight. The big loser may be Edwards. Without a win in Iowa it is questionable as to whether Edwards can remain viable. Hillary remains a serious contender for the Democratic Nomination. Hillary may have to work harder to get her message across. But there are no doubt friends; Hillary’s message is the best of the bunch.
It has been a long day and I am exhausted, so look for the rest of my thoughts on Iowa to appear over the next few days.
Good night and God Bless....
